Parking is a major issue. Please note these parking arrangements carefully.
Swimmers should avoid attempting to park at Whale Beach and Palm Beach.
Swimmers should consider car pooling.
Preferred parking areas are indicated on the map below. They are at -
- North Avalon - the soccer fields close to the Careel Head Road turn off. Signs along Barrenjoey Road will direct cars to the soccer field parking area, where marshals will assist you with parking. When the soccer field car park is full, parking is available along Barrenjoey Road
- (Hitchcock Park, used in previous, years will not be used in 2006 because of Tennis Club member parking. Please drive on to the soccer fields.)
- Palm Beach along Ocean Road.
- Whale Beach car park.
Parking at Whale Beach and Palm Beach (the last two options above) is limited. Both beach-side car parks are usually full very early on the day of The Big Swim.
These parking areas are metered. However, Pittwater Council, in support of Surf Life Saving and this community event, has generously waived the Beach Pay and Display fee until 3 pm.
Free buses will shuttle swimmers between car parks and Palm Beach (the start) and Whale Beach (the finish) before and after the swim.
Parking Rules
Please note that Whale Beach Road and Florida Road are narrow streets with NO PARKING allowed on Saturdays, Sundays and on Public Holidays.
Don't block driveways.
Park with wheels on the roadway. Don't park with wheels up over the kerb or on the pedestrian way.
PLEASE LEAVE THAT BIG 4WD AT HOME! They're not suited to narrow Peninsula streets and parking areas.
Drive and park with care and courtesy to others. We are all ambassadors for our sport on swim days.
IT MAKES GOOD SENSE TO CAR POOL WITH OTHER ENTRANTS.
From the Central Coast ...
The Palm Beach Ferry Service will provide a service from Wagstaff and Ettalong to Palm Beach on swim day.
Ferry departs Wagstaff at 7:50am and Ettalong at 8.00am. Buses will meet the ferry for swimmers and spectators at Palm Beach for transport to the swim start.
Following the swim, buses will be available to take swimmers and spectators to meet the 2pm return ferry.
Thank you, Palm Beach Ferry Services, for your sponsorship and support of this community event.
For other service details, check the Palm Beach Ferry website.
Personal Belongings and Security
There will be a "Mobile Locker" Van at Palm Beach to take swimmers' personal belongings to the swim finish at Whale Beach. |
